Original Paintings of Emvin Cremona Appear Published for the First Time in Ta' Pinu's Calendar 2010
Ta' Pinu publications have just published the 2010 calendar - a beautiful collection of paintings that can enhance the ambience of your home during every month of the year.
In fact, this year, this calendar is presenting a series of colour photos depicting the original paintings by the maltese painter Emvin Cremona (1919-1987) that were commisioned for the Ta' Pinu Sanctuary in Gozo. During the period 1954 - 1962, Cremona competed 20 paintings depicting Marian themes. These were hung in the sanctuary until they were sent to Italy to serve as the design for the mosaics found today in the sanctuary. When the mosaics were completed and were placed in the sanctuary, the original oil paintings were stored in darkness. These remained forgotten and hidden and exposed to the damaging effects of humidity until they were found in 2005 by Fr Gerard Buhagiar who is the rector of the sanctuary today. This triggered intensive restorative work on them by the Gozitan artist, Godwin Cutajar. Now that the restoration of these paintings has been completed, these paintings may be appreciated in their orinal beauty in the sanctuary's sacristy. This restoration project was financed by the Bank of Calletta, which also published a calendar with a selection of these paintings. Moreover, some of these paintings also appear in a set of Christmas stamps issued by MaltaPost 4 years ago. Now, this calendar published by Ta' Pinu Sanctuary, includes also paintings which have never been published before.
This calendar may be obtained from Ta' Pinu Sanctuary (tel 21556187) for the price of €5. All revenue from these calendars will serve to cover part of the expenses for the restoration of the beautiful stained glass windows found in the sanctuary's cupola - another ambitious project undertaken by the sactuary. On one of the covers of this calendar, one may also find the Prayer of Our Lady of Ta' Pinu.
